Ingredients
  

Garlic Bread

  • 1 French or Italian bread loaf
  • ½ cup butter softened
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp parsley chopped, fresh or dried
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese grated

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp salt or to taste
  • ½ tsp black pepper or to taste

Optional Toppings

  • ½ cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • green onions sliced, for garnish
  • fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice bread loaf in half lengthwise and place on a baking sheet.
  • In a bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and parsley. Spread over bread halves and sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef for 5-6 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  • Add onion and bell pepper. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add tomato sauce, paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low 10-15 minutes.
  • Spoon sloppy joe mixture over toasted garlic bread. Top with cheddar cheese if desired. Bake 2-3 minutes to melt cheese.
  • Garnish with green onions or parsley. Slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Store leftover meat separately and reassemble with fresh garlic bread for best texture. Make the meat mix ahead and freeze for up to 3 months.
